JMU arboretum-Katie FineSmith

This is a view of the JMU arboretum on a sunny day, it is located across from the entrance/exit to east campus by heal and the east campus dorms. JMU students often use this space to walk around on a nice day and enjoy the beautiful scenery ha it entails. often, you will see students laying out on the green around the lake, feeding the ducks or even walking their dogs along the trails. i think that the campus designers intended this space for just that, a place where students can go to enjoy the beauty of nature and just relax from the everyday stress of college and life. i really don't see any ways that this space on campus could be improved for student use, there are a lot of benches all along the trails and around the lake for students to sit and just take it all in, the trails are kept up with really nicely and just the overall feel and look of the arboretum is perfect. With respect to sustainability and environmental concerns, i feel the only thing that could be improved would be to maybe place a few more garbage bins and recycling bins around in general. I have many great memories here so far in my time at JMU, it's just a great place overall to sit and enjoy your surroundings and take a breather from the hustle and bustle of the university. i definitely believe Greenberg's article is correct with respect to JMU, a campus should have buildings that create a sense of uniformity to all and we definitely have that here!

  1. I agree that this part of Madison is very beautiful and relaxing if you need to walk through a nature-like area instead of around by buildings. However, this place doesnt exactly give me that sort of memory. It brings me back to gkin 100 with a teacher who used to run cross country in college. We would run four miles every class through the killer hills of the arboretum. I'm on the softball team and we get enough running and working out as there is so that kinda sucked to have to do it for a class. haha but a great place if your not forced to run all over it! (:
