Carly Ringwood's Space

The space I chose to highlight is the fountain in front Burruss Hall. Students use this space as a place to sit and socialize on a sunny day, but I have also seen students use this space as a place to pull pranks, such as putting soap in the water and swimming in it. I believe that the designers intended this space to be seen as aesthetically appealing point of interest on the quad. This fountain is a symbolic portal connecting present students with students that once walked the same campus. It reminds students and faculty alike of the historical entrance and importance of the library. It could be utilized further if there were floral arrangements nearby, more available seating and if there were lighting in the fountain during the evening. This particular fountain not only links me to the historic past of JMU but it will always provide me with laughter of memories of fountain divers.

  1. I think the space might have been intended more for social purposes rather than aesthetic purposes as the author stated. The fountain is round with seating to look inviting for people to sit and socialize with one another. The fountain is also set in an open area, making the flow of students pass by the fountain on their way to class.
