Joseph Sarnoski's Madison Space for Dr. H 4/7
This is a picture of the quad at about 3:00 pm. The weather was warm and there were a great number of people on the quad. The picture shows the wide range of use for this space. There are students relaxing, walking to class, playing games, and even prospective students and parents taking tours. The space was being used as intended. As a JMU student I see the space as a place to relax and maybe take a brake in between class. The quad has even more uses for the school, it is used for organized events. The space is used frequently, especially now that the weather is nice. When the space isn’t being used for a specific event it is open for grabs for all sorts of recreation, including but not limited to an impromptu ultimate Frisbee game. Many students even use the space to study as a nice break from the bleakness of the library or a dorm. The quad is usually the most crowded place on campus, there are always classes going on next to it in the surrounding buildings. The quad is a high traffic area that serves many purposes, it is an open public space for students to do with what they want.

I chose to comment on this picture because the quad is a huge part of the JMU campus, Its what gives JMU its Collegiate vibe. UVa has the Lawn and this is our response. Its a beautiful example of public space, or an area that is set up to promote interactions between people. It allows even the loneliest of students to be aware of the existence of fellow class mates.
ReplyDeleteThis photo is an absolutely perfect image that embodies our students, University, and portrays a wonderful aesthetic point of view on our campus. I decided to comment on this picture because it is definitely one of my top 5 places to be on campus during a spring day at JMU. I usually utilize this space for conversing with friends, eating lunch, studying for an exam and meeting new people. Another way this space could be used is professors can hold classes outside on the quad during nice days. This image is special to me and moves me because it symbolizes the typical perfect image of what a college campus should look like. It is very carefree and relaxing and really makes you want to be a part of the image.

I believe that the Quad is one of the most important public spaces on campuses. It is a place where many students go to hang out with their friends, chit chat, read a book, or play a game of Frisbee. I know personally, that I have spent a lot of time on the quad and without it; the campus would not have the same effect at all. I feel that the quad is important because it brings JMU students together. Not everyone on the quad knows each other but it is a public space that brings everyone together as one and as a community. I definitely feel that the designers intended the quad to be used as it is today and would be proud to see that they succeeded.
ReplyDeleteThe Quad is the perfect place to be once the warm weather comes. It is full of students, and is the central part of our campus. I’ve noticed many students enjoying the days here, from playing Frisbee to grilling hotdogs and hamburgers. For prospective students, they can easily see themselves coming with friends and enjoying the Quad just like the current students. The Quad was the reason why I decided to come to JMU, you could easily see the bond all the students had and what kind of community JMU is. JMU has easily become my home away from home, and gathering on the quad with my other fellow students completes that feeling of home. Melanie Torano
ReplyDeleteThis image of the JMU students surrounding the quad is definitely a reason why I chose JMU. When I saw a lot of the students playing Frisbee golf, girls tanning, and people just studying on the quad during my tour/choices, it was an environment I wanted to be apart of. I feel this is a picture that would be on our university’s website to show not only the beautiful scenery, but also how active people are at JMU. This space was also used for a huge snowball fight during the blizzards earlier in the semester. -Jacki Gordon
ReplyDeleteI believe the quad could one of the most or the most important part of campus. Students come here to socialize, relax, have fun and take the stress away from classes. I believe the creators of the quad, new the quad would have this very function and designed it with that in mind. It gives the campus a very college feel and community feel. It definitely brings a lot of potential students to lean towards JMU. It is very symbolic, being in front of one of the most important buildings, Wilson, where the old administration used to live. It is in the center of all the traditional buildings, causing students to walk through this area, everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. I agree overall the quad does serve many purposes.

Whenever I picture JMU, this picture is what comes to mind. A nice day with many students relaxing or studying on the quad. The quad is a central part of the JMU campus. Greenberg would very much approve of the quad and all the bluestone buildings surrounding because they are all the same and serve as a central part of the campus serving many purposes. When I saw the quad on my tour of JMU I loved it, and it was one of the main reasons I chose coming to JMU.

I like this view of the Quad because I feel like it is the point of view I see the most since I cut through Wilson to get to my classes almost every day. I love beautiful days like this when every one is out and utilizing the Quad space. It almost feels like the beach because of all the warmth and happiness around you.

This is a great picture that reminds me of having good times hanging out on the quad. I really like this picture because there is shows all the students hanging out. The only change i might have made was take the picture on the other end of the quad so that you could get Wilson in the picture. A picture of the quad will always remind me of JMU.

I think this photo of the quad directly defines what JMU is all about. I see it as a public space of community that allows a variety of people to socially interact with fellow students. I agree that it is a great place to just relax on nice hot day and also to get involved with the several organizations that host events on the quad. When the weather is nice, the quad is the best place to go and hang out with friends, maybe start a game of catch or just catch up with people. I completely agree that it promotes unity among the student body and is definitely being used for its intended use. When I was a prospective student visiting the campus for the vey first time, the quad was a definite deal breaker. I loved the fact that, when I came in April 2009, so many people found it so rewarding to gravitate to the quad on a hot spring day. I thought it was beautifully built and I couldn’t wait to enjoy it myself. The quad completely works as a public space that defines the JMU community. It promotes social interaction and gives students the ability to just relax. The quad was one of the factors that made me chose to come to JMU.
ReplyDelete-Katie LeWine's Comment for Dr. H
I commented on this post because I feel like the quad is the biggest public gathering space on campus. It's used for almost everything from physical activity to sleeping. Although it's not officially used as a place to gather and discuss issues, I'm sure issues are solved there, and as we can see by the picture above, it's definitely a place where people gather. I think originally the quad did haver a symbolic meaning of being the center of campus. It's still currently the center of the bluestone area so it continues to have it's symbolic meaning to this day. -Brandon Brown (Dr. Mulrooney's class)
ReplyDeleteI chose to comment on this post because of the way it captured the quad. It shows the quad for what it is meant for and that is more than just lookig at. It is a place where people can go to enjoy themselves and relax from the days classes. There is nothing like running into your friends who are sitting on a blanket after a tough day of classes to relax. I think the designers did a great job with the quad because it is centered around the focus which is Wilson but still provides a lot of room to spend time in. It is just as functional as it is beautiful and I believe that it is the staple of James Madison University.
ReplyDeleteThis picture is a prime example of why the quad was designed with an open area in the middle. This open field has sidewalks crisscrossing through it to different classrooms. This image also shows how this setup increases interactions with others. The quads public space is a great area to lounge, hangout with friends, and meet other students. -Brandon Jones
