Cynthia Knott's Madison Space for 04/07/2010

This image is something we are all familiar with, Festival Hall. Festival Hall provides many different functions for JMU and is clearly a part of the distinctive "East Campus." The yellow brick and mod feeling are strikingly opposite of the blue stone and Spanish red roofs of "The Quad." One could argue, like Allan Greenburg did, that this building single-handedly displays the University’s recent neglect of maintaining architectural integrity on campuses. However, I do think this building is quite unique to JMU and not something that you might see on any campus anywhere.

Festival Hall holds a lot of meaning for JMU’s campus. For many students, Festival is the first building that they ever enter on campus; it functions as the greeting office for guests and prospective students. Big presentations are held in the Festival Grand Ballroom right before hundreds of potential JMU Dukes divide into their small tour groups and explore campus. However, Festival Hall completely transforms itself after prospective students become current students. No longer, the unfamiliar building that lost families search for, Festival becomes a dining hall, an everyday stop for a sandwich or burger. It loses all of its mystery and becomes a routine part of campus life.
