Blog Post #1 of the Quad

The space I chose to do my blog on is formally known as “the quad.” It is a big lawn full of trees and open space. It is surrounded by buildings primarily used for classes and other school related activities. The quad is the center of the old side of campus and is basically the heart of campus. The fastest and most convenient way to get to the quad without having to ask people who may not be good at giving directions is to catch an inner campus shuttle bus or a bus that stops at either Varner house or Hoffman hall. However, make sure to check the updated spring 2010 bus schedule so you know which bus route to catch and make sure you look at the right day. JMU students use this space to do several things such as: sun bathe, relax, study, play games, socialize, read, and meet new people. I believe campus designers intended this space to be used by the reasons stated above. They wanted the students and staff at JMU to use it at their leisure. I love the quad the way it is. It is beautiful and is very welcoming. I do not think there is anything more that JMU can do to it to improve upon it. The quad could possibly use less sprinklers to conserve water. Other than that, I do not believe the quad poses any threats to our environment. The quad will always be a space that I will never forget. I go there when I want to get away from school or want to lie out and soak up the sun. I feel as though it puts me at ease. It is also one of the prettiest central locations of JMU. Greenberg’s article is not correct with respect to JMU. JMU is making a great effort of trying to collaborate the old and modern historic times together. There are old buildings that reflect some historic features from the old days. However, the skyline area is where the more modern buildings are located. The campus captures a theme that allows us to capture a sense of being surrounded by different time periods when we are walking around. The Hillcrest House is a great example of hoe JMU tries to conceive a feeling of the past while ISAT has the more modern effect.

  1. This picture is special for two reasons. First, it gives a great view of the new performing arts center that will open next fall. Secondly, it was undoubtedly taken from a spot right between the current music building and the spot on the grass where all the music majors sit and relax on a Friday afternoon. Some of my fondest memories of JMU are from this very spot, hence why this picture is so close to my heart.

  2. I like that this picture was taken facing away from Wilson because it shows that the quad is not entirely closed off, which I think adds to its welcoming and communal atmosphere. The view of the new performing arts center across South Main also shows how JMU continues to expand into the surrounding community, which many Harrisonburg residents resent. It is interesting that these two concepts are both present in the picture because it illustrates that JMU's continual expansion is overtaking the community, and in the eyes of residents, this expansion is at odds with the kind of friendly, community-oriented openness that JMU wants to present.
